Data Engineering

Data Engineering

We use the term Data Engineering to cover the tasks involved in acquiring, transforming, delivering, and sharing data as a single source of truth for analysis in an automated, repeatable way. Other common terms include ETL (or ELT) and Data Warehousing.

You'll need to Data Engineering support to:

  • Consolidate data from multiple sources into a single repository
  • Govern, format and verify data consistently, optimising it for analysis
  • Migrate to, and leverage the benefits of, cloud technology
  • Establish a single source of truth, ensuring that all enterprise data is consistent and up-to-date

Common tools and technology we use include the Microsoft stack (e.g. SQL, Azure Data Factory) and Snowflake

ETL stands for 'extract, transform and Load,' move data from one database, multiple databases, or other sources to a unified repository—typically a data warehouse. It enables data analysis to provide actionable business information, effectively preparing data for analysis and business intelligence processes.

Examples of projects we've completed include:

  • Finance systems e.g. Xero
  • CRM systems e.g. Salesforce CRM
  • Marketing systems e.g. Google Analytics
Data Analytics

Data Analytics

We use the term Data Analytics in the context of data analysis, data visualisation, interactive reports and dashboards.

Modern reporting surfaces clearer trends and insights from within your data. More people can make better decisions, based on information they can access anywhere, anytime.

However much we automate, however big our dataset, however clever our calculations, if you cannot communicate findings to others, you can’t make an impact with your analysis. This is the power of data visualization. Data visualization is a language and it's important to know how to convey information to decision makers in a way that is actionable and easy to understand. This skill, combined with the ability for analysts to share the steps they took to discover the insights in data, is often defined as 'data storytelling.'

You'll need to Data Analytics support to:

  • Visualise and analyse your data to transform raw data into actionable insight
  • Assess and implement modern tools such as Power BI and Tableau
  • Move away from manual Excel reporting and/or legacy systems
  • Follow visualisation best practices to present data in a consistent, easily understood format
  • Give your end users confidence in the data, and embrace your data initiatives in their daily decision making

Common tools and technology we use include Microsoft Power BI and Tableau. You can read more information about both of these technologies here, or read the 2022 Gartner Magic Quadrant for BI & Analytics here.

BI Strategy and Support

BI Strategy and Support

In addition to Data Engineering and Analytics, we provide a variety of consulting, strategy and support services to ensure your data initiatives are successful.

Discovery and Strategy

In order to understand your needs, objectives and priorities, we'll run Discovery Workshop(s) with you to review your current data environment and form a Strategy and Roadmap based on a partnership approach - expectations, roles and responsibilities, timeframes, and how we can best support you.

Project Management

We'll work to ensure we're meeting expected milestones and deadlines, whilst also communicating what we're expecting from you throughout the project. Regular project management will communicate any risks or issues along the way, and we'll work together on resolutions and a revised approach if and when needed.

Training and Mentoring

Our consultants can provide training and mentoring best suited to your goals and users: such as one on one mentoring, or group sessions. We're happy to guide your users towards self sufficiency, in order for them to be able to ask and answer their own data questions with confidence.
